ResumoBiofuels have been cited as an alternative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to fossil fuels use. However, its cultivation still faces some socio-economic and environmental challenges to overcome, in particular the elimination of the burning practice during harvest. This study aimed at estimating the GHG emissions avoided by replacing the sugarcane harvest system from burned to green harvest (mechanized) in sugarcane areas of São Paulo State, Brazil. Estimates were calculated considering the period from 2011 until 2021, when the burning practice should be eliminated, as established by law. Applying the IPCC (2006) methodologies, the annual emission balance contemplates both agricultural and mobile sources of GHG, according to the mean annual use of supplies (per hectare per year). The sources of GHG emission considered were associated with the following agricultural practices: i) sugarcane residue burning; ii) direct and indirect N2O emissions from N synthetic fertilizer applied on soil, organic composts such as vinasse and filtercake application and sugarcane residues left on soils after green harvest; iii) lime application; and iv) emission from fossil fuel used. Remote sensing images were used to evaluate whether the harvest was performed with or without the burning practice on a cultivated area of 4.72 Mha in crop year 2010/2011. It was found that 2.10 Mha (44.4%) were burned prior to harvest (Canasat, 2011). Considering an annual conversion rate from burned to green harvest of 200,000 ha during a period of 10 years, the burning practice will be eliminated by 2021 accounting for an avoided emission of 3.7 Mt CO2eq, not considering the soil carbon sequestration. In addition, applying the IPCC (2006) methodologies to estimate the potential soil carbon sequestration due to conversion from burned to green harvested areas, the estimates indicate a supplementary potential sequestration of 6.2 Mt CO2 for the estimated period.
